March 2013 (The last week and a half'ish)
So here is the inaugural entry for my first blog. I've always thought about starting up one, but I didn't want it to come out like a diary. I wanted it to be about something that I cared about, or else what would be the point of writing, you know? A few weeks ago I started getting into podcasts. After a couple of days, I had my favorites (Doug Loves Movies, How Did This Get Made) and I found some that I could do without. The ones that I liked all had singular theme, movies. Of course, this makes perfect sense for me... my qualifications to come.Okay, so movies... well, where do I go from here? My plan is going to tell you what movies I've seen the previous week (like you care). I'm not going to get into full reviews in movie (well, maybe once in a while if it deserves it), but mainly giving a brief opinion and grade of the movie. I'll also give out some suggestions, take some suggestions, my take on some upcoming movie news/trailers, and maybe a tale or two about my movie life.
I'm not a Writer, as you can tell from my 2 previous basic and boring paragraphs. Though I'm not a Writer, I know for a certainty I am a Watcher (that sounds creepy). With over 3500 movies watch under my belt, I doubt anyone would argue my self-proclaimed title. I consider myself a fanboy of movies in general and not one specific genre or series; however, I love the new G.I. Joe movies even though they weren't as awesome as my inner 10 year old self wanted them to be... I'll always want to wake up as a character in a G.I. Joe episode.

Which brings me to the first movie... G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. If it was me, I would get Michael Bay (or someone equivalent) to direct a movie who's source material would be PERFECT for him. But no, they hire a guy who's directing credits include, and are limited to, Step Up 2, Step Up 3, and Justin Biber: Never Say Never... THIS IS WHO IS DIRECTING A G.I. JOE MOVIE?!?!?! It's also not just the directing, but the screenplay/writing makes no sense... none. From scene to scene, my repeating thought was "Wait, how did we get here?". It just bounced around so that basically angered me. Then throw in RZA and that stupid story line... it's getting me mad just thinking about it now. There are other things that I could complain about, but I don't want to dwell on the bad in the G.I. Joe franchise... keep looking for the good. Redeeming factors: Snake Eyes, G.I. Joes coming to live on the big screen, and Toledo getting another actress in the spotlight. From a movie critic stand point: C. From my years of playing with the 3.5" toys: B/B+.
THE HOST. Now that the Twilight movies are over, the whole genre seems to be hurting (read: Beautiful Creatures). This looks like it will be on somewhat the same track as far as box office numbers go... maybe not as bad. This actually disappoints me because I did read, and enjoyed, this book. Yes, I read this Stephanie Meyers book... and I read the Twilight books, so there... judge away. Anyways, I did go and see this, and enjoyed it. It didn't give the book complete justice, but really, what movie has ever given full credit to its source material? The Seeker (Diane Kruger) had a little bit more in the story line than the book, and more than necessary. Thought the casting was spot on for a few characters, specifically William Hurt as Uncle Jeb. It left the door open, like the book, for a sequel... the problem is there is a question mark for whether the next books will be written. My review... B.
Since this is the first, I'll keep this one short... don't want to bore people more than I have already on the first time out. Here are the other movies I watch this last week (or so)... These are first viewings:
- The Prophecy (Christopher Walken)
- Indecent Proposal (Moore, Redford, Harrelson)
- Admissions (Tina Fey)*
- Wrong (Alamo Drafthouse film)*
- Jess + Moss (2012)
- The Host*
- G.I. Joe: Retaliation*
So here's the first entry. If you made it this far, thanks for reading. If you're a blogger, any tips are greatly appreciated. I figure it might take a few entries before I get comfortable with what I'm doing. Looking to the future, there aren't any new releases that peek my interest... but who knows, might just have to sit through one for dinner at the Alamo Drafthouse.
